Aviation - Air Crash
Tuesday, 24 March 2009 05:54

A FedEx MD-11 cargo plane crashed at Narita Airport and burst into flames at around 6.50 am on 23 March 2009. Gusty winds were reported at the time of the accident. The captain and copilot did not survive the crash.

The Narita Aviation Weather Service Center had issued wind shear warnings for the area below 500 meters at the time of the accident and this was confirmed by 9 airplanes that landed just before the accident. They reported to the control tower that they had experienced wind shears below 600 meters.

The control tower informed the FedEx crew that the wind around the runway was blowing from the northwest at 52.2 kph, with maximum wind speeds reaching 64.8 kph.

At the time of the crash, the wind, averaging 48.6 kph, was blowing from the northwest. This would mean that a headwind was coming slightly from the left for the FedEx MD-11 as it lands on Runway 34L (340 degrees). You can see 4 YouTube videos below.
