Singapore to New York - Longest Nonstop commercial passenger flight

Hi Capt Lim,

Please put my mind at ease. I am sure that in 1985/86 I flew from London to Sydney by QANTAS non-stop and it took about 22 hours in a long-haul  Boeing 747.

I was telling a friend this the other day and he told me that this was impossible and no aircraft at that time could fly that distance non-stop.

Now I am sure I am not that mad but I can find no evidence now that it is true.

What could my journey have been? In all the time that has passed I have believed I went non-stop.

Alan Clark

Hi Alan,

I hope what you thought happened in 1985/86 did not occur during the twilight zone of your life!

In reality, there are no commercial non-stop flights between London and Sydney yet.

What actually happened was, in 1989, Qantas flew the first non-stop civil flight from London to Sydney as part of a publicity stunt on its first Boeing 747 jumbo but with only a handful of passengers on board rather than a full payload. The distance flown was 18,001 km. However, this was only a delivery flight.

However non-stop flights from London to Sydney could soon be a reality. Boeing is developing a new version of its 777 twin-engined aircraft that could fly all the way to Sydney without refuelling.

Flying non-stop would reduce the journey time from between 22 and 24 hours to about 19 hours.

Longest commercial flight in the world on a Boeing 747
