Boeing 777 taking off – View from the Jump Seat

Dear Captain Lim,

I am a big aviation fan, just read your book and I like the story very much.

I just want to ask, is there any possibility that I can visit the flight deck during a flight?

I don't mind if it’s after flight, best if I can sit at the jump seat during take-off and landing.

Thanks

Regards,

Heng

Hi Heng,

Cockpit visits by passengers are no longer allowed by law after September 11, 2001 under the FAA (America) or EASA (Europe). This is the result of attacks in America at the World Trade Centre Towers in New York City and The Pentagon in Washington by authorised persons.

However there are some exceptions whereby only certain category of company employees and Inspectors from the Civil Aviation authorities are permitted to occupy the jump seats.

Unofficially, you may have heard of some people being invited to visit the cockpits but they are the exception rather than the rule. The effected rules may differ from country to country but some cockpit crew may be lax, especially in smaller regional airlines. Officially, the answer is no.

As regards to cockpit visits after flight, this may be permissible provided the cockpit crew are notified well in advance through the Flight Attendants. It is up to the captain.
