Which Plane - Fly Airbus A380 or Boeing 777 to New York?

Hi Captain Lim,

I love the information in your website.

I will be flying to New York from Malaysia. I am contemplating to fly either on Cathay Pacific B777 or Emirates A380. I am concerned over flying the Polar routes on B777 as there have been icing problem on the engine.

Is A380 a better bet to fly on?

Thanks,

Regards,

Raj

Emirates Airbus A380

Hi Raj,

As an ex-Boeing 777 pilot, I can say that the icing problem on its engines has been resolved and I have no issue flying on the plane at any time.

The Airbus A380 is a newer plane and I would fly it because of its novelty and not because it is any safer than the Boeing 777.

I believe the Cathay Pacific B777 would fly closer to the Polar region and the Emirates A380 would fly further away, generally fringing the south of Greenland on its way to New York.

Which plane would I fly on? Either one is fine. Only the fare, convenience and the age of the hardware would probably tip the balance. You can make the decision based on these yourself alt.
