Weather - Air Turbulence
Friday, 04 January 2008 10:41

Hello Capt Lim,

I admit to being a "white-knuckled" flier! One of the issues I face is motion sickness, which makes my general anxiety about flying even worse, when I encounter air turbulence. My motion sickness is why I avoid amusement park rides!

Our family is debating about a trip to Hawaii, from Eastern Washington in mid-April. I know you can't predict weather, but speaking generally, is that time of year usually an issue for turbulent weather over the Pacific? I do much better knowing at least a little of what we might face flying...

Thank you for any insight or help you can provide!

Ann

Hi Ann,

It is quite difficult to predict air turbulence three months ahead on the route that you will be flying on. However turbulence forecasts are usually provided for a much shorter period ahead rather than months ahead of any flight. A good site to go to is Turbulence Forecast and also on USA 1 here. where it provides forecast for period from 0 3 6 12 18 24 hours ahead of your flight.

I have written a lot about air turbulence and you can view some video clips on air turbulence below:-

Least Tubulent Route
Dear Captain:

Please help. I am flying to NEPAL from Seattle during the last week of March and will be returning around the 1st week of April. I JUST don't like flying, I am so scared. The Quickest route will be Korean Air: from Sea/Tac to Seoul and Seoul to KTM (two Take offs and two landing). However, I am told the weather pattern is really bumpy over the Pacific, especially in that route AND Korean Air has less than perfect records in Safety... smilies/sad.gif

So I am thinking , maybe I should Take British Airways POLAR Flight to London, London_Delhi, and Delhi KTM. Other option I have is Flying JAL from SFA to Tokyo, Tokyo -Bangkok and then Bangkok-KTM.

Please advise... which route should I take for less tourbulent flight? And which Airlines will serve better (safety wise) for a scred chicken like me. smilies/smiley.gif

THank you very very much.
