Pilot Career - Becoming a Pilot

Hi Capt Lim,

First of all, your website is great and informative. Actually, I’ve just finished my SPM and waiting for the result to come out in March. After that, I might go for the Matriculation program or Diploma but I am willing to go for pilot training at WCC Philippine which cost 121k++. It is my ambition since I was 7 years old.

However, I have just read the latest news about the pilot jobs position in Malaysia. There are so many pilots graduates who are unable to get into these 3rd hottest jobs in the world yet due to the economical problem in the country today.

What should I do? What do you think about the current and future market for pilots? Should I take the risk? 121k is not a small amount. Can I get any scholarship or sponsor? Please help me!

Thanks for reading my email and I hope to hear from you soon.

Izwan

Hi Izwan,

It is true that there are many pilot graduates waiting to be absorbed by the airlines in Malaysia. This was probably due to some new flying schools promising job offers in the airlines and willing applicants lured by them. I have mentioned many times that only candidates sponsored by airlines are generally guaranteed of a job and privately sponsored pilots have a hard time competing among themselves for the airlines job.

Furthermore, many foreign flying schools fail to warn applicants that the license obtained overseas are not recognized in Malaysia. Hence they have to fork out up to RM100, 000.00 to convert them to a local license before they can be considered for employment in the country. Some even have been conned to pay a lump sum of money and left stranded overseas without achieving their goal.

Please pay a visit to the Department of Civil Aviation to check on the flying school status before you proceed for the flying course.

According to the Director of Flight Operations of the Department of Civil Aviation Malaysia, the local aviation industry would soon provide more job opportunities as the two main local airlines continue to expand.

In my earlier post, Air Asia cadet pilot program is now opened to qualified Malaysian candidates. If you meet the requirements, I am sure you would get a chance to be a sponsored pilot. Please apply on line here.

I wish you all the bestalt.
