Pilot Career - Becoming a Pilot
Thursday, 24 February 2011 15:29

Hi Capt Lim,

This is the first time I am sending you a message.

Let me introduce myself. I'm a 21 years old lady who works as a flight attendant with Air Asia. I wish to become a pilot after being with them for one and a half years.

Last month, Air Asia opened its cadet pilot program and I submitted my application. Unfortunately, I think I was not shortlisted because I did not meet their requirements alt

So I would like to ask you whether there is any other way for me to become a pilot. Should I get a private pilot license (PPL)?

I really wanted to become a pilot rather than a flight attendant.

Thank you for reading my message. Have a good day. I really love your articles that was published in the Air Asia's Travel 3Sixty in-flight magazine.

Hope to hear from you soon. alt

Jacy

Air Asia Commercial
Hi Jacy,

Yes, there is a precedent where a flight attendant has become pilot in Air Asia. She was successful because she met all the requirements in terms of academics and aptitude. Getting into any airlines today is very competitive and unless you excel, it would be a very long and winding road to this career (see earlier article here)

As you have read in many of my answers in this site, the market is flooded with pilot graduates looking for a flying job and unless you are sponsored, your pilot dream may be difficult to achieve. Please read the article ‘the pilot wannabe success story' here. You got to persevere till you are selected.

Getting a PPL is half baked unless you want to fly for pleasure. It has very little advantage at this time. Even if you want to fund yourself privately to get your full license (frozen ATPL) - it would be a very costly investment with no guarantee of employment at this moment (this is a repetitive advice).
