Do airline pilots get sunburn in long haul flight?

On Ultra Violet (UV) Rays

Hi Captain Lim,

How are you? I have a question:

Do airline pilots get sunburn in long haul flight? If yes, then how do they protect themselves?

Finally, does the windshield of newer aircraft (eg: Boeing 777, 747-8) block out more UV radiation?

I read that flying, especially at high altitude, can increase the risk of skin cancer significantly. But, I also know that windshield is laminated and has a vinyl inter-layer that should block out most UV rays (both type A and B). Unfortunately, UV intensity does increases with height..

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I appreciate your opinion.

Thank you

The Great Airline Pilot Shortage Myth (Part I)

Dear Captain Lim,

I always wanted to be a pilot. It is my passion and dream. I am from an average family and have some financial problem to pay for the course fees, I have applied for the British Airways cadetship but was rejected. This means that the only way to fulfill my dream is through the flying school.

I know that educational loan does not provide for 100% of the total course fees. My Mum and I have decided to "re-finance" our house. Our plan to do so was not only to pay for the course fees but also to help my Dad settle his credit card debts and other loans so that we have to pay for one loan only.

I know I wouldn't settle for a normal 9-to-5 job, I wanted freedom. That's why I want to be in the skies. This is actually not a second option. I want to be a pilot and I know what his responsibilities are. It's not about the glamour and salary, I really love and enjoy flying.

I don't know what to do. Do I really have to refinance my house? I know it will put my family in risk too.

I really hope that you could answer and give me some advice

Thank you for your time, I really appreciated it!

Best Regards,
Bryan San

(Below is my contribution to the Travel 3Sixty in-flight magaine for October 2015)

Some air travellers describe their encounter with air pockets as dropping thousands of feet.

I have often explained that the experience is similar to travelling on land where a smooth road suddenly gives way to bumps and potholes, making the journey a little uncomfortable.

In spite of the term being quoted so often, it is in fact impossible for there to be a ‘pocket’ in the sky as air vacuum cannot exist in the atmosphere.

British Airways wants female pilots (17Feb15)

Hi Captain,

I have just finished reading your first book, LIFE IN THE SKIES within three days. The book gives me a lot of motivation to not give up in life; I’ve to recourse one of the aviation subject in my Institute. But yeah, I need to stay strong to become just like ya. oke

Let move to the question. Let say, after one has been qualified in License Aircraft Maintenance and then he takes a piloting license, does he get a higher salary than the other pilots with no Engineering background?
