Let me add this. PEA has only a handful of good instructors. I can think of 3 from south america and one from india, and another from israel. There are a few more but they generally only administer exams Unfortunately such instructors are few and far between. I have noticed that many instructors don't develop their students stick and rudder skills properly and they usually just do performance based exercises without really developing a student's decision making abilities, Often times students are taught incorrectly, few examples are:
1) Inadequate and sometimes non existant instruction on leaning techniques ( I knew a commercial pilot that had NEVER leaned the mixture)
2) I was once told to put the C172 into a forward slip when I had extended 40 degrees of flaps. I promptly reminded my instructor to read the Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH) again as such a maneuver is discouraged.
3) After doing my first chandelle (a typical commercial level maneuver) I noted several mistakes I had made while my instructor just said "good" and continued texting on his phone. He did not last long as my instructor
4) I knew an instructor applicant (an individual training to be an instructor) that was unsure of crosswind takeoff technique. He/she now works there by the way.
5) They don't let students fuel or add oil to their planes. I tried to do it myself and was told that is against policy. You drive a car, and know how to refuel it. I think the same logic should extend to pilots.
6) They are known to pressure their examiners to pass students even if they don't deserve it.
7) I knew a commercial pilot that used ground winds to plan a cross country flight, which any pilot will say is a big NO NO
8) I knew an instructor that taught a flight planning lesson to a student in 30 minutes. I would say this lesson takes three ours maybe spread of two 1.5 hours sessions.

At PEA they produce a lot of pilots, I have met many terrible pilots, a few good ones, a small handfull of exceptional onces, and even fewer who deserve their certified flight instructor license

Their fleet of 172s is quite nice actually, all late model airplanes. However, they over emphasize automation (i.e. flying with the autopilot) and GPS. Where i fly now GPS is rare with the planes I am flying and none have auto pilot. You need to know how to hand fly the plane, so ask your instructor, like I did, to use the "old fashioned equipment" especially when doing your instrument training.

So its got nice planes with many (not all) poor instructors. I would recommend flying elsewhere. - BAM

!! bad bad experience !!
these guys are way too expensive and they have more norwiegn instructors than any one from single continent. if atall a non-norweign gets hired by those bloated asses in their department, their is another moron sitting in the flight management department.I think his name is Lars klijgberg from Norway.he never allows others non-norwegian instructor to have more than two students. One thing is sure, you cannot see smiles on Norwegian's faces and certainly they think they are superior to others. To end at this they have a habit, of changing instructors too many times without any genuine reason and in the mean time you will be billed for lot of money. But last not but the least "history is not made by cowards"...... Courage my lord .But if you have gathered enough courage to take the plunge, I cannot stop you on that...go for some other school besides pea......never pea.never I warn you.

My instructor was from Norway....I got my private pilot licence in 101 hours beause of the evil work of my instructor/s.First of all i got 7 instructors changed in the span of 7 months.

Instructors are instructed to increase the flying hours of student so that the school can make money. When there is rain or thunder storm they cancel the flight and next day they do refresment flight.Which makes hole in your pocket and make flying miserable.During your flight exam they simply fail you and re exam

Do not go to this school very expensive and very money minded people. They do not help you in any of your problems.I had got scholarship and these people they never showed interest to processes the scholarship. Then again I had to come back to India.Admissions officers are very much unprofessional. This school is filled with 90 percent Norwegians students and instructors.Atmosphere is very unfriendly and selfish. Most of the instructors treat their students as shit......

They have spent $200000 on making this video.Do not fall for illusions.Do good research and find cheaper school.because training is more or less the same. They pay $15/hour to flight instructors, while they get $180/hour from the student for cessna 172.The instructors work thier asses of so that this school makes money.even if you are here for 10 yrs u cant make friends here .These norweigins do not mingle or interact with any one!!!

Once I had a cross country solo flight (not to forget after all hazzels) from Daytona Beach to Gainsville. While i was landing and my left rudder lost function and my plane slipped away from the runway to the grass and I Was fortunate (Thank God) that day i came alive out of aircraft. The atmosphere in the cockpit is very very bad.Instructors shout at you and think they are your masters. They infact trained 2 girls for free because they took sexual favours from them.

If you go to Phoenix East Aviation (PEA) and treat getting your pilot ratings like a job...get up, go to school, study 9-5 and then enjoy the rest of your time doing whatever you like...you will be golden.

I started in PEA in 2009 as a student, completed all of my training and was hired on as a an instructor.

Since then, I have had the opportunity to gain time and experience on all of the school's aircraft, opportunities to work instructing ground schools and have gained the credentials as a team leader, stage check pilot and 141 check airman.

Don't be fooled. I see guys (and girls) every day who have never worked a real job a day in there life and have had everything given to them. They picked aviation because they thought it sounded fun and it wouldn't be as much work as the university that mommy and daddy were going to send them to.

If you have any work ethic at all, you'll be fine. I see three types of pilots every day:

1.  The student who takes the training seriously and excells;

2. The pilot who wants it and tries hard but it just takes a little while; and

3. Probably a good +40% that talk a big talk but think they BS there way through their training and blame everybody else for why they don't succeed.

Come with the right attitude and take the training seriously, and you will be fine.

PEA isn't a perfect school....show me one that is (it's impossible). PEA is a good school. With that said, picking a school was the hardest choise I made prior to commencing my flight training and the decision that cannot be made lightly.

I was not a star student. I worked hard to complete the training I did. After you finish the training through commercial pilot, that is just the tip of the proverbial 'iceberg'. Only those who have the monetary resources, connection in the industry or a lot of intestinal fortitude will stick this career path out to the end. It's no walk in the park but if you succeed, it's one big 'notch in the belt'.

Good luck!

good school, but beware of their refund policies...once you complete training, getting your unused money back ,assuming you overpaid is a task they will make very difficult for you..they gave me hell on my refund...my advice is pay as you go along...good luck. - amk

I'm a student at pea.
I am not familiar with these sad experiences that people write above.
I read about a guy that did his PPL in 7 months...?OBVIOUSLY he wasn't studing enough or couldn't get it,because average PPL at PEA takes 3-4 months.

I had no experience in aviation at all and got my PPL in 45 days!

Let me tell you one thing, training is all about syllabus, instructor, weather and above all, your willing to put your ass down and study.

i would not recommend anyone to go to phoenix, there are plenty of better flight school in daytona or elsewhere in america.

Whatever you do, if you ignore my message plan to go to phoenix. Make sure you don't pay all your 70,000 dollars all at once or else you are basically trapped there and most likely you will end up spending a whole lot more than 70,000 anyway. Because if you decide to leave the school, then phoenix take 15% of YOUR money which is in your school account with them. That happen to lots of my friends, phoenix promised them that they'd hire them for instructor so therefore it's better they pay their money all at once. PLEASE DON'T DO IT. infact don't go to this school at all but if you do decide to go, don't let them fool you telling you they'd hire you as instructor. Obviously they can't hire everyone as instructor but they are bias and greedy.

Obviously they treat the students from norway better than they treat all the other students due to some contract they have with norway. If you aint from norway and you go to them with a problem expect to be blown off lol.
Unless you have lots of money then maybe they will listen to you.
Did i mention they are greedy.
i'm glad i'm done with this school, as they only care about making more money and not about the students. - mullins fefe

Phoenix aviation had a plane crash this year 2011 because they have shitty planes which is overflown and obviously poorly maintained because the plane crash was not pilot error, plus they usually tell us not to lean out the mixture when we fly, what a loud of crap.

From my experience at phoenx aviation they put business first and students last, if you are having a problem instead of them looking into it and trying to help you they just ignore you and continue to let you waste money. At first it took me over 7 months to finish my private and then now my instrument is taking so long because they kept changing my instructor, either the instructor had to go back to norway, or some crap like that, then next instructor letting me repeat the lessons which i have already passed. I went through 4 instructors during instrument. And that's really sad. Most of my fellow students will discourage you from coming here at phoenix.
Let me try and finish up my instrument so i can leave this place and find another school. I speak to bob my administrator but he is just a waste of time and you'll get nowhere with him. If you do infact come to this school pray that you get a different administrator.

Here are the details about the plane crash on this website

There is always people talking trash cause they have bad experience about one school and its usally their own fault. I went there. Did my certificates and got hired by the school. Got just over 1000 hrs and went back to sweden and converted. The price they give always have an certain amount of hours included in the price. If u as a student need more hours to know what u are suppose to know before checkride either orally or in flight you have to pay the extra training which of course will bring the total price up in the end. I had some students myself that needed more hours and they passed the checkride but yes it did cost them more. Rememer that the program is based on an average and if u maby need some more time in the beginning the price will rise. The maintenence they have at Pea is really good and it might be alot of schools that is much more fancy but u will also see that on the price it cost you to go to that school.
