Is there anything I can do about my color blindness?

Dear Captain Lim,

I have this small question I need to ask you. I am a mechanical engineer and had a passion to fly but didn*t know that I was color blind. The DGCA panel doctor of my state in INDIA advised me to go through the Edridge Lantern Test. All my other medical reports are normal. Now the report is like this:-

Edridge Green Lantern Test

Color 13 1.3
white green green
Red Red Red
yellow yellow/green green
green green/yellow green
sea green green green
blue blue blue

My panel doctor said I had a very slight chance as I had a marginal error. But what I see is a lot of mistakes. So basically, I don*t know what the DGCA (Director General of Civil Aviation) doctors would be deciding. Do I have a chance? Is there anything else that I can do to get through the test?

Secondly, I clearly can distinguish white from green but during my test I was confused - green and sea green too was able to distinguish correctly. I am now in a 2 month waiting period to get my answer from DGCA.

Lastly, you website was a real great help. I wish I had access to your website earlier. Your website was of great help and I would definitely recommend others who are opting to join aviation.

Thank you

G. Mustafa

Hi Mustafa,

Please do a search on color blindness in my site
and also visit the Forums (some discussion there) for the Aspiring Pilots.

I am not sure how your DGCA would decide on your case as some countries may impose a more stringent standard than that of the FAA.

Best of Luck to your future flying career!
