Good day. My name is Min Fseng and I live in Malaysia. I have graduated my degree course in August 2003I am genuinely interested to become a pilot as a life time career. I have gone through a few websites and I found that your website is really great.
I have a few questions and hope you have the time to answer them.
MAS has just advertised their cadet pilot scheme in Feb 2004. I have applied and normally, how long would MAS take to select the candidates? Based on the information I got from your website, SIA takes 10 months to employ a cadet pilot. How about MAS?
ay you recommend to me some websites for psychomotor skill and psychometric test (IQ)? I would like to do some preparatory work before I go for the battle.
I was arguing with my Mathematic teacher sometime back; She said that an airplane could not reverse but I said yes. Who is right? Based on her information, an airplane needs a tow truck to pull from behind. I have traveled as an airline passenger a few times before and found that the airplane could reverse as usual. I didn’t see any transport pulling from behind. Please advise me on this issue.
Besides the Bernoulli’s theorem, is there any principle that applies to an airplane in flight? Based on my research, I found out this is the only one. Please correct me if I am wrong.
I appreciate your effort to help me. I hope I would be accepted by MAS as a cadet pilot.

Hi Min Fseng,
1. I cannot give you an exact time frame when you would be called for the selection process. Please read the email from one successful candidate in a previous FAQ in this site.
2. I can recommend you to a good site by QANTAS. Please click on Psychometric Test Practice Leaflet. Here, it introduces you to some tests that you can expect in a pilot selection process. The Psychometric Test consists of a number of tests and questionnaires, namely Verbal, Numerical, Diagrammatic and Spatial Reasoning tests. These tests would examine your logical evaluation of statements, interpretation of statistics, recognize logical sequences, and manipulate shapes in three dimensions. In these tests, you are required to work accurately as well as quickly by the time given. In addition, you would also be given Personality and Motivation questionnaires with no time limit, but you are advised to work quickly rather than pondering at length over any one question.

3. Regarding whether an airplane could revere like a car, both you and your teacher are not very correct. There are no 'reverse' gears in an airplane cockpit where the pilot can select to move out on the parking bay in the airport terminal. When you see the plane moving out, it is being pushed by a tow truck from the front and not pulled from behind as your teacher said. However, most modern planes have reverse thrust capabilities, not for the purpose of moving out of the parking bay, but mainly for assisting them to slow down the planes, hence reducing the landing distance.
4. The Bernoulli's theorem is probably the only principle of flight that explains clearly how an airplane is able to fly in the air. Ah, you can also elaborate a little more (to score more points!) about how an airplane can fly inverted - something not consistent with the Bernoulli's principle. See my explanation in one of the FAQ in this site. Other than this, you are not expected to explain anything more than this in the interview
