Dear Captain Lim,
At the moment, I'm considering whether I should go for the CPL/IR/ATPL(frozen) course at a CAA approved institution in Australia as I was previously rejected for the cadet pilot program.
Due to the high fees involved at BAFT (Australian Aviation College), my whole family financial efforts would be needed for funding me through these courses. They are worried that I may not be to land myself a job even after completing the course. Below are some of my queries:
1. What is the success rate or percentage of privately funded students(CPL/IR) being employed by major airlines?
2. Normally, how long does one have to wait before one has a chance to work with major airlines?
3. While the wait begins, what other jobs opportunities are there for him and what are the salary scales that he could expect for these other appointments.
I would greatly appreciate if you could advise me on the other issues which you think may help in my decision making.

Hi Arthur,
1. The airline industry is a very fluid market. You must have heard me saying this many times in my site now. At this time, there is a shortage of pilots in the Asian region. If you have failed to get into a major airline as a cadet pilot before, your chances of getting into it again are not very encouraging, unless at the time of graduation, their own supply cannot meet the demand.
2. I cannot give you a specific answer to this - please refer to the reply above.
3. You can try the low cost carriers. I know Air Asia is looking for pilots now. If you have the qualification, your chances are very good. There are other general aviation jobs available but the salary is not very attractive as compared to the major airlines.
