Would a marijuana possession ticket prevent me from becoming a pilot?

Hi Capt Lim,

I enjoyed your site and decided to ask you a question that I didn't see in your FAQs. I got a single Marijuana Possession ticket on my record. Would this keep me from becoming a Commercial Pilot of any kind?

Working right next to an airport makes me want to start my training sooner. I cannot wait till I get my Private Pilots License.

Thanks,

Donald

Hi Donald,

If you want to be a general commercial pilot, a single marijuana possession ticket should not prevent you from becoming one. However, if you wish to join the major airlines, it may be a bit problematic as they do vet through your background.

Anyway, not all is lost! There are many flying jobs in general aviation (private charters, banners towing, agricultural spraying or crop dusting, tourists sightseeing, etc). Build up your experiences with more hours and all the relevant ratings.

Try to apply again in the future. If you have changed to a new leaf, I am sure the airlines may consider your application if you can prove to them that you are good at the job.

Mr.
Would a single expunged marijuana posession ticket prevent me from getting a job as an airline pilot?
