Will a pilot on holidays with his loved ones be called up to fly at any time?

Hi Capt Lim,

Your web site is the best and most comprehensive site out there. I would like to know if a Boeing 777 pilot can take their loved ones on trips with them. For example, a pilot is expecting to spend the holidays with his loved ones and suddenly he is called out on a job.

Is there any way that he could take his partner with him? If not, then this job is indeed one for SINGLES only!

I am anxiously waiting for your response (only if you have the time) and I would REALLY appreciate it.

Thanks so much!

Gregory

Hi Gregory,

If a pilot is on his annual leave and spending his holidays with his loved ones, he cannot be called up to fly by the airlines at any times as he is entitled to his rest and recreation. However, if he were on duty and brought his wife along (which is permissible), then he could be called up to fly as and when required to do so.

Yes, airlines are compassionate! Every pilot is entitled to spend his off days with his partners without fear of being called up to fly at the whims and fancies of the company! Pilots do have Unions or Associations to look after their welfare and more details of their rights are stated in their Charter or Memorandum of Understanding.
