This web site is fantastic and it does explain many of the questions in my mind. I really feel lucky that I have found this site. I am a Malaysian and I wish to join Malaysia Airlines as a commercial pilot. There are a few questions that I would like to ask you:
1. I am short sighted with a visual acuity of about 500 degrees diopters on both my eyes. However, I have no other eye problem or diseases and my sight is corrected to normal with optical aids. Will this be a problem for me to become a pilot?
2. How long does it take for a cadet pilot to become a captain?

Briefly, if you are short sighted with 500 degrees diopters on both your eyes, it can affect your chances to be a cadet pilot with Malaysia Airlines even though it may be corrected to normal with optical aids. The standard is set by the airlines but DCA (Department of Civil Aviation) requirements are lower. To the DCA, you can become a pilot as long as your vision can be corrected to normal but not necessary the airlines.
The time period from a cadet pilot to captaincy may take between 12 to 15 years, depending on the airlines and the vacancies available.
