Can I still be an airline pilot at 45 years?

Dear Capt Lim,

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to become a pilot. I am now 45. I currently hold an Australian unrestricted private license with Controlled Airspace (Radar), NVMC endorsement.

Of course my ultimate goal would be to fly for an airline. However, any flying role would be a blessing. Training costs are prohibitive for most of us. I think (pretty sure) that my age would be greatly against me, but if anyone would pay me to fly anything, I would be happy.

Realistically, is my age going to strongly hamper my chances of gaining employment if I could gain the higher levels of License? I feel as if I have gotten a late start when compared to other applicants.

Flying is the only thing I have ever really wanted to do and I am afraid that I have missed the final boarding call. I have made many fine friends over the years who are Airline Pilots and know of the sacrifices made by them and family to get there.

I also considered trying to become a Stewart for a Airline. Looking at their requirements, swimming, other languages, would make it hard also. But it comes back to, how much you want to get to where want to go!? Anyway, any ideas or help is most welcomed .

Thank you very much for your web site, your time, and your desire to help others through your knowledge and experience.

Regards,

Rick.

Hi Rick,

As regards to your desire to be an airline pilot, if I may use your words, it is a bit too late for the boarding call, but there is a still some hope for you in a few low cost carriers if you have the proper training and have at least a CPL and Instrument rating. At 45 years, (you may be more respected due to your age), why not do some instructional flying to gain your experience? Since you have a PPL, you can be an Assistant Flying Instructor in a Flying Club to gain further flying hours and finally, to achieving your dream. For details, you should check with the Australian aviation authority.

Best of luck to you in your future aviation career!
