Would overseas carriers look down on an ex-American military pilot?

Dear Sir,

I was browsing the Internet today, and came across your web site. I was most impressed by it. I am an American pilot who happens to be employed by a regional airline, flying the Embraer 145 regional jet. However, I am also a pilot for the US Air Force Reserves. I am currently based in Qatar flying as co-pilot on the C-130 Hercules. I will be released from my military deployment in several months and I will be returning to the left seat of my regional jet. I have had a great deal of interest in flying for an overseas air carrier, but I am curious to learn your opinion on a question I have.

The question: do you feel that overseas carriers will look down on an American who has military experience. It seems that many countries dislike America, and I am curious to learn if this opinion has made its way to the airline world abroad. Also, do you know if there are any foreign carriers that hire individuals with FAA licenses, or must one be licensed under ICAO. I gather that you work for an airline in Southeast Asia. My background is Filipino-American, and I wonder if companies like Singapore or Cathay prefer to hire individuals with an Asian background. I understand that you must have a tremendously busy schedule, but I would very much appreciate any insight you may have.

Sincerely,

Peter

Hi Peter,

I don't think any oversea carrier would look down on an American who has military experience. In fact, you would be surprised to know that at least 25 per cent of airline pilots in this region are from the military. I believe you need an ICAO license to operate in Singapore or Cathay Pacific Airways. Pilots in both these airlines come from various Nationalities and you should have no problem fitting in provided you are successful in being recruited by them.

I wish you all the best.
