Hi Capt Lim,

First of all, may I say your web site is so helpful and I love it so much.

I am a third year University student from Hong Kong and working towards being a pilot in Airlines as my dream. I am  planning to apply to become a flying crew in Hong Kong or China after I graduate in April. As there are no aviation school here, it seems that applying for the cadet pilot program would be the only way to go. In fact, I have searched for aviation schools throughout the world like Comair or Basair. It is, to be honest, the most ideal way to join the airline pilot program than spending so much for just a fresh graduate like me. As I still have half a year before I graduate, I am thinking of getting myself prepared before the interview. I really hope you could give me some advices on the following :-

RECRUITMENT:

When or how many times a year are the cadet pilot program being held?
H ow many people would be recruited?

Any English test like TOFEL or IELTS required?

REQUIREMENT

Do they accept shortsighted applicants, or those taken laser surgery (since I know EVA Air from Taiwan stated clearly that they won't accept applicants who have undergonelaser surgery ).

SCREENING

F ormat of the screening?
C ontent of the interview and aptitude tests?
W hat mistakes would applicants made?
A nything applicants can prepare before the interview?
Also, what do you think about working in China? I have heard that the accident rates there are higher than elsewhere .

Thank you very much for your assistance. I hope I am not bothering you too much. I really look forward to your favorable reply.

Regards,

O'Brian Tang

Hi O'Brian,

Since, you are from Hong Kong, you should apply to join Cathay Pacific Airways under the Cadet Pilot Programme. I have extracted this advertisement from their Website and it answers most of what you want to know:-

To qualify for our Cadet Pilot Programme, you must be at least 18 years old and a Hong Kong permanent resident. You must be at least 1.6m tall, be physically fit (including your eyesight), and possess an excellent command of English. The minimum educational standards we require are:

5 passes in HKCEE / O-Level, including Physics and Mathematics, together with 2 passes in HKAL / A levels, preferably in Science
OR

a Degree or Diploma in any discipline (or the equivalent educational standard obtained overseas)

To join our team, please download the application and medical forms. Completed forms together with your resume, copies of certificates and transcripts are to be returned to:

Flight Crew Recruitment (CPP)
Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd,
6/F, Flight Training Centre,
Cathay Pacific City,
10 Scenic Road,
Hong Kong International Airport,
Lantau, Hong Kong

You may also fax to (852) 23506595, or email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
Okay, I will run through some of your queries:

1. For information on recruitment on the Cadet programme, you can find out more details from the email above. As for language, you must have an excellent command of English. So your score for TOFEL or IELTS must be very good as well!

2.   For medical requirements, you can download the medical forms on top. I am not sure if they would accept shortsighted candidates or those with laser surgery. Some Airlines may insist on a higher medical standards.

3. I am not sure about the screening process of Cathay Pacific but you can click here on Cadet Pilot Programme for more details. In addition, you can also read some of the FAQs in my site for tips and guidelines for aspiring pilots to other Airlines.
Cathay Pacific Airways is one of the top Airlines and unless you cannot get a place there, then you can try for the Airlines in China.
