Who investigates air accidents?

Written by Capt Lim, on 09-01-2008

Published in : Aviation, Air Safety

Whenever there is an airlines accident, the first thing that occurs would be the formation of an investigation team. Their tasks would be to determine the cause of the crash and then make recommendations for future improvement.

The responsibility of convening such a team lies with the country where the accident occurs or country where the aircraft was registered.  In the United States, the National Transport Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft and engines manufacturers and the airlines involved would be participating in the investigation.

If the accident involved sabotage or hijacking, like the September 11th attack at the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, the Federal Bureau of Investigation would also be involved.  So, an investigation not only serves to determine what caused the accident, but also to make important recommendations to prevent further similar problems.
