Is it true that pilots tend to be more promiscuous?

Hi Captain Lim,

My hubby very recently got recruited into being a commercial pilot. He tells me that he is an envy of his peers (non-pilots), as they think he now has the opportunity to meet many pretty air stewardesses.

I respect my hubby's career choice, but can't help worry a little that he may be tempted to have an affair. Is it true that pilots tend to be more promiscuous since they are constantly surrounded by pretty ladies? Are there many instances where pilots do have long drawn affairs which they keep from their wives?

Thanks Captain Lim

Jen

Hi Jen,

I have a similar kind of question posed to me by another trainee pilot before (See "Is it true that you won't be able to stay faithful if you are a pilot?")

It is true that pilots are generally working in an environment where they are constantly being surrounded by charming ladies. Whether this will make them more promiscuous (or taking part in many casual sexual relationships) is a very subjective question. It will depend on your hubby or even your personality. If he is of the flirtatious kind, then you have cause to be concerned about. On the other hand, if he has been a faithful husband, then you should trust him more.

I have been happily married for many years now and I must confess that I have a wonderful wife. Even today, when I have a very early morning flight, she will wake up to prepare my breakfast! She trusts me a lot and I reciprocate accordingly. If you can show that you can be a better partner than those pretty ladies out there, then you need not have to worry.

Having said that, I must admit that there are some pilots (the black sheep) who have secret long drawn affairs outside their marriages. Some say, this may be some kind of an "aviator occupational hazard Cry" that one may have to live with when one is married to a pilot!

It happens to other professions as well.

Stay cool, think positively and make the best out of your life! Smile
