Is it possible for a privately sponsored cadet pilot to be jobless after graduation?

Dear Captain Lim,

I heard rumors that chances of getting a job after graduation from a flying school is very low in Malaysia.

As for me, I am thinking of going to APFT privately. It will cost me around RM225K for the course and I definitely have to pay back the money (for the loan) at the end of the day.

So, is it possible for a private cadet pilot to become jobless after training? Any advice?

Thanks.

Rezolles

Hello Rezolles,

Good day!

It is hard to say whether you will have a good or low chance of getting a flying job after graduation because pilot demand is always dynamic. This means that it will vary from time to time. So generally, it depends on your timing. If someone graduates at the right time, he may get a job within a few months but some may have to wait for as long as a few years before they can be hired.

Currently, there are few flying schools in Malaysia offering ATPL courses and one can expect all these schools to produce at least a few hundred cadet pilots a year. So it all depends on how fast airlines like MAS, AirAsia, MAS Wing or Firefly can absorb them.

Hope this will help you to make a better decision.

Best Regards

First Officer Chang (Airbus A320)
