Can a cadet pilot wear glasses and does he require to be strong?
Pilot Career - Eyesight
Wednesday, 02 January 2008 20:28

Dear Capt Lim,

As one of the requirements for the cadet pilot application is visual acuity. It is stated in the Singapore Airlines website that, a candidate needs to have 6/60 visual acuity, 6/6 with optical aid.

Does that mean that if one that has 6/60 visual acuity without optical aid, he/she is eligible to apply for the position?

My visual acuity is 6/12 (right) and 6/6 (left) [without optical aid]. So, am I eligible to apply
for cadet pilot?

Also, I like to know that is the training program very hectic and need a lot of physical strength?

I hope to get a reply from you as soon as possible. Thank you.

David

Hi David,

Yes, you can apply to be a cadet pilot provided your eyes can be corrected to a normal 6/6 vision with glasses.

Of course you need to be fit and the flying course is hectic but you don't need to have a lot of physical strength to fly an airplane!

Eyesight problem and airline career
Hi Capt. Lim!
I am 13 and i really want to become an airline pilot. But i have a problem with my eyesight. I got -3.5 and -4 strength (i am nearsighted) Would my dream ends because of this? Or would my dream continues and comes true? And what are the airline companies that accepts pilots whose have eyesight problems whether it is nearsighted or farsighted?

Cheers.

Dear Captain Lim,
My current myopia is 600 if not, 700 degree in power. Does that mean I can't be a pilot?
Would you kindly reply to kaven_@hotmail.com

can I be a pilot with glasses
Hi captain Lim
I'm 13 years old an ikve always wanted to be an airline pilot but I have eye problems and both my eyes are -2.25 are airline pilots allowed to wear corrective glasses or are they not?smilies/cheesy.gif

I have had a concern like this as well. I'm also 13 but my eyesight is -4.5! I became really afraid that would I qualify for an airline pilot so I did some of my own research and I found out that if your eyesight is above -6.00 or +5.00 you are O.K to be qualified for a a.pilot. The thing about corrective lenses now if both of your ayes can function 6/6 WITH OR WITHOUT contacts you are O.K. Even if you eye has major problem you may qualify. Let me give you 2 examples :
Once a pilot went on to have 23 years of experience as a a.pilot and he couldn't even see the big E without his glasses!
To take another example there was a.pilot whose one eye got shot and he still flew as a a.pilot!

So you shouldn't loose hope smilies/wink.gif
