Dear Capt Lim,

Can you please explain why the chronometer has to be started on the application of take-off power in the Airbus A320 and all Airbus models?

What is the need to start the clock at take-off power application?

Hi George,

During the take off, when full power is set, the clock is started to time the duration of the power settings as there is a limitation on the application of TOGA (Take Off Go Around) power.

For instance, if an engine fails, TOGA power is restricted to 10 minutes on the single live engine. For two engines operation, TOGA power is limited to 5 minutes. That is the main reason for starting the chronometer during the take off.
