Flying - Flying the Plane
Sunday, 12 December 2010 06:58

Hi Captain Lim,

My name is Winston Lim.  I'm 13 and my ambition is to become a pilot.

I just came back from China on an Air Asia Airbus A320. I am wondering as to how the plane was able to fly with such a heavy load like humans and their bags?

An Airbus 320's engine is small as compared to the Boeing 777. I was very worried about, what if the plane became unbalanced?

I was so scared. Just wanna know…

Winston.

NASA Aviation Safety Program
Hi Winston,

The Airbus A320 has a maximum take of weight of 73,500 kg and carries a maximum of 180 passengers whereas a Boeing 777-200 has a take off weight of 297,550 kg and carries around 305 passengers.

So each plane is loaded according to their maximum capacities and must never be exceeded. As regards to their cargo and load, they are evenly balanced so that they are never out of trim.

You need not have to worry as it is checked and certified by the captain before take off. If the loading were unbalanced, he would get the loaders to reposition the cargoes.
