Hi Captain Lim,

Just had a quick question regarding the ageing Boeing 747-400 that MAS (Malaysia Airlines) flies.  I am considering going to Bali from Kuala Lumpur later this year and usually opt for newer aircraft when I can get them. 

On this occasion, for the fair price I want to pay, I'd have to settle for the Boeing 734 if I fly MAS, or should I fly with, say an Airbus A320 with Air Asia? They have a good safety record too but I'm just biased against discount carriers from a safety perspective.

Without any bias towards MAS, which would you prefer to fly for safety – the 15-20 year old Boeing 737-400 with MAS or the new Airbus A320 with the likes of Air Asia?

Both Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia have equally good safety records. My choice would be the newer Airbus A320 with Air Asia.

I believe that with a newer aircraft - its generally adds more safety margin in terms of aircraft reliability.

Dunno about the age of the plane
To me, more important than the age of the plane would be how much room will I get. If the seat pitch is 28 inches on one airline, vs 30 inches on the other, I'd take the 30 inch pitch, all other things being equal. I guess when you're tall, like I am, you tend to care about space for you knees

Coming from an engineering background, I would say that it's not entirely correct to judge the safety of the aircraft by it's age. Like all things mechanical, it's the maintenance job that is being carried out timely that makes the plane safe and airworthy. Just my 2 cents.

Exactly right Benjamin. There are many critical parts having "approved life extensions" nowadays with stress calculations factor thrown in. Have heard of a local JV with UK, Strand Aerospace - who are making waves in this sector. Good on the local aviation industry.
