Storm!! Boeing 737 Go Around and Landing in Crosswinds

Hi Captain,

I want to seek some knowledge about the procedures a pilot can take when an aircraft is at 2nm short finals to touchdown. If there is thunderstorm activity at the aerodrome, what will the pilot do at 2nm short finals?

What about the ATC? Will the ATC inform the pilot of any occurrence? Or will the ATC just let the pilot make its own judgement to land or go around?

Hi Sierra Two,

Depending on what aircraft you are flying (a Flying Club single engine plane or an airliner?) - an airliner like the latest Boeing or Airbus planes have better equipment to warn the pilots of any severe thunderstorm activities.

For a basic light plane, you would generally be warned by the ATC as any thunderstorms may be accompanied by gusty winds or wind shears. The control tower will advise you on the strength of the wind before you are cleared to land. If the wind exceeds your plane’s limitation, you must go around on your own accord.

On airliners, they are equipped with Predictive Wind Shear System that detects strong and gusty winds. It has aural warnings that command the pilots to go around if the plane encounters conditions that are not stabilized or dangerous.
