Pilot Career - Flying Schools
Written by Capt Lim

Airways Aviation Flight Training Academies
Hi Capt Lim,

I want to seek an expert and veteran's advice on Aviation. My son is 15 years old and has shown a keen interest in this industry. He has recorded all the Air Crash Investigation series and is able to quote the errors made by the pilots and what should have been the right procedure.

He has read your book (Life in the Skies) many times and aspires to be a commercial pilot like yourself. He has constantly shown much interest in becoming a commercial pilot.

However, in terms of vision he has high astigmatism, nevertheless his grades in school are commendable.

Would like to seek your advice on the career path of achieving this with the following questions below :

1. Would the astigmatism issue pose a problem to becoming a pilot.

2. Is there a college that I could enroll him after his PT3

3. Is there a good and reputable flying school I could enroll him.

4. Is it true that we have excess pilots in the country and the waiting list is a long queue?

Thanking you in advance and appreciate the guidance.

Hi Mervin,

Your son’s enthusiasm in flying is commendable. Below are the answers:-

1. Astigmatism is not a big issue as it can generally be corrected. In fact, shortsightedness is also acceptable as long as it can be corrected to a normal vision of 6/6 (20/20)

2. Flying Schools normally accept students that have at least 5 credits in ‘O’ level or SPM which must include English, Mathematics and Physics/Science. PT3 qualification is not acceptable in any local flying schools in Malaysia.

3. If your son intends to work for an airline in Malaysia, you can enroll him in one of the 3 flying schools in Malaysia at Malacca, Kota Baru or Langkawi (for more details, go to my Website under Flying Schools  here with 313,354 hits and 35 comments). Doing the course in Malaysia saves you additional expenses in converting the overseas license to a local one. For oversea flying training, try Airways Aviation for further enquiries.

4. Yes, we have excess pilots in the country but they are gradually being absorbed by the airlines. Remember, Malaysia Airlines has just closed down the Boeing 777 fleet and that affects the short term pilots demand.

Excess pilot vs demand of pilot
Hi captain lim, is it only malaysia has excess pilots? I read a news from CNN if not mistaken it says that the Asia is short of pilot? if the pilots cannot find job in Malaysia, there is still chances to get job outside this country ?

Excess pilot vs demand of pilot
Malaysia has excess inexperienced (new graduates) pilots but short of experienced ones! There are flying jobs outside the country and most of the airlines are recruiting only those with experience.
