How Some Unruly Passengers Behave in Flight…
On a recent flight from New York to Delhi, an unruly male passenger urinated on a woman in the plane.
This person appeared to be drunk on the flight.
The victim demanded for the immediate arrest of the culprit upon landing but against her wishes, the crew brought the passenger before her. He apologized and begged to be spared for the sake of his family.
The victim alleged that the airline staff had refused to touch her urine-soaked shoes and bags, merely spraying them with disinfectant. They then provided her with airline pajamas and socks to change into.
When this news was reported, it had prompted public outrage in the social media.
Normally such disorderly conduct face offences such as sexual harassment, obscenity and insulting the modesty of a woman under the Indian laws.
As such, he should be dealt with according to the protocol for disruptive passengers and be handed to security on landing.
Instead, the airline took action only after the news became public knowledge and after the airline had made a police report.
Unruly passengers are generally dealt with differently depending on the countries.
In India, they are banned from flying for between three months and over two years depending on the severity of their offense
In the United States, disruptive passengers can face fines up to $25,000 and sometimes lengthy prison sentences. In addition, the airline can ban the problematic passenger from any future flights.
In Canada, the captain has the same powers of arrest as a Police Officer. He is authorized to enforce all sections of the Criminal Code and all Acts of Parliament while the aircraft is in flight.
As in my past postings I had mentioned about my share of such unruly events in flight too.
In one of my flights to Frankfurt on a Boeing 777, a flight attendant reported to me that a drunken passenger had been flashing at her when no one was watching. Despite warnings, he persisted with his lewd behaviour.
The drunkard had indeed turned into an exhibitionist by deliberately exposing his willy to the flight stewardess. He probably believed it may fantasize her to become sexually aroused by his display.
Unfortunately, he was not so lucky. We contacted the Frankfurt Airport flight operations to inform the Security of this flasher on board.
On landing, he was escorted off the plane and taken into custody.
After a long and wearying 12-hour flight, our team, consisting of 4 technical and 9 cabin crew had to stay back to facilitate the investigation process.
Oh, it was definitely a most tiring wait at the Security to complete the protocols!
This was probably the reason why the airline crew concerned did not pursue the case and let the disruptive event off lightly until it became a public outrage.
