The Hidden Danger of Tail Strikes
Every pilot knows the moment: the nose lifts, the wheels leave the ground, and for a split second the tail of the aircraft dips dangerously close to the runway. This is a tail strike — when the rear underside of a plane scrapes the ground during takeoff or landing. It sounds minor. It isn’t.
Why It Happens
Tail strikes usually happen when a pilot rotates (pulls the nose up) too fast or too steeply during takeoff, or flares too aggressively while landing. Heavy aircraft, short runways, gusty crosswinds, and pilot inexperience all raise the risk. Long body jets like the Airbus A340-600 or Boeing 777-300ER are especially prone to it because of their lengthy body and the limited clearance between tail and tarmac.
Why It’s Dangerous
A tail strike might look like nothing more than sparks and a scraped fuselage, but the real danger lies inside. The aircraft’s pressure hull can crack or weaken, and if that damage goes undetected, it can lead to catastrophic decompression at cruising altitude. This is exactly what triggered the 1985 Japan Airlines Flight 123 disaster — a tail strike years earlier was improperly repaired, and the resulting structural failure caused the deadliest single-aircraft accident in history, killing 520 people.
Catching the Damage
Because the danger isn’t always visible, airlines treat every suspected tail strike as a serious event. Ground crews inspect the tail skin, pressure bulkhead, and internal structure using visual checks, dye penetrant tests, and sometimes X-rays. Even a strike that leaves barely a scratch on the outside can hide fractures within the layers of aluminum or composite material.
Preventing It
Modern cockpits now include tail strike warning systems that alert pilots if rotation angle or pitch rate gets too aggressive. Simulator training also drills proper rotation technique, especially for longer aircraft where the tail arcs further than pilots might instinctively expect.
A tail strike may last less than a second, but its consequences — if ignored — can echo for years as in Japan Air Lines 123 case where 520 lives perished.
Tail Strike on VN 34
On August 15, 2026, Vietnam Airlines flight VN34, a Boeing 787-9 departing Munich for Hanoi, had a badly delayed rotation on runway 26L, overran the runway, causing it to damage runway lights, strike its tail. The aircraft then dumped fuel and circled before landing back at Munich Airport, with multiple tires shredded and the fuselage punctured. No injuries were reported, but the jet is likely grounded for repairs while investigators probe the cause.
